Who is Printemps

  • Modernity as a tradition

Printemps stakes its claim as an indispensable monument offering a slice of French history and culture.
At the very heart of Parisian life, its transformations set the tone for Jules Jaluzot, a visionary with a passion for commerce, who built an essential part of the heritage of one of the most beautiful cities in the world…

“Everything will be new, fresh and lovely there, worthy of the name Au Printemps (‘spring’ in French)“

    Jules Jaluzot

  • Permanent evolution

1865! A visionary entrepreneur is struck with a genius idea: to build a department store that offers everything. Several months later, Printemps opens its doors. Its name refers to the spring season, symbolising renewal, freshness and the blossoming of dynamic ideas. Right at the centre of Paris, it is the first to be equipped with electricity and to offer set prices: an incredible breakthrough at a time when haggling was commonplace.

Parisians make a beeline for Printemps... In the 1930s, the sumptuous Art Nouveau pavilion of Printemps is at the heart of the World’s Fair. But the store continues to innovate and move forward! Despite two fires, Printemps never ceases to renew, modernise and embellish itself... In 1975, it receives the absolute honour: the building’s façade is registered as a Historic Monument.

  • Heritage under restoration

14,000 square metres of façades under restoration

Printemps illustrates an essential part of Parisian culture and does everything in its power to maintain this status: this is proved by the immense worksite, which undertook several years of restoration as of 2006... Exceptional artisanal trades were united: stonecutters, mosaic artists, gilders, master glassmakers... A burst of energy thrives around this wonderful building: its history, which changes our present life, becomes even more radiant. Printemps weaves its magic once more!

  • Breathtaking panorama

3,185 glass panels compose the Printemps cupola

Much more than a shopping destination, Printemps – a Historical Monument – promises exceptional surprises: on the 9th floor of Printemps Beauty-Home Store, all of Paris is at your feet! A panoramic terrace unveils what no other site can offer: an open, unobstructed view from the Opéra to the Madeleine, from the Eiffel Tower to Montmartre. Likewise, at the Brasserie Printemps, the breathtaking sight of the Art Deco cupola illustrates one of the most beautiful pages of the heritage represented by this Parisian symbol.
